Last fall, I had the honor of coming alongside my dear biz bestie, Kat Schmoyer, to help her refresh her brand and build her an all new home on the web using our favorite website builder: Showit 5. Today, I’m breaking down the BTS of the Creative at Heart Conference Website Design so you can get a peek of how it all came together!

 

I’ll admit, when Kat first started talking about her need for a new website, I was extremely nervous. Creative at Heart has grown into such a big name in our industry. It represents so many creatives in all different levels of business, industry niches, and as Kat likes to say, caffeine levels! Many creative entrepreneurs find a “home” in C@H and feel apart of something special. A family.

 

If I was going to design for C@H, it had to be more than just pretty. It had to welcome all of these beautiful people into the family and inspire them to chase after their dreams.

And the main reason Kat hired me? It had to convert. Not just in 2018 or 2019. Kat needed a site she could grow with through the “seasons” of her business from launching Creative at Heart conference annually to the new projects she has on the horizon that I can’t quiiiiite divulge about just yet. 😉

 

I always approach design projects with room to grow in mind, but this was a whole new level of strategic thinking! If you explore the templates, you’ll see that one of my main goals is to create designs that are extremely easy for the end user to edit. I think through the same concepts with my clients. I don’t want them to have to jump through hoops to make changes to their websites; including shifting things around when the main goal of a season changes.

 

For Kat, that meant creating multiple Home Page concepts she could easily turn on and off during specific seasons and launches, carefully crafting a long form sales page design to deliver ALL the important conference details in an approachable and digestible way, and building out a custom quiz experience with stunning results pages.

 

Designing the Creative at Heart Conference Website was one of my biggest projects to date, but it quickly became a career favorite!

A FRESH TAKE ON THE CREATIVE AT HEART BRAND

 

After Kat dug into my design questionnaires, it quickly became apparent that the Creative at Heart brand needed a re-fresh. After 7 rounds of beloved conferences, C@H had “grown up” in a way! And there is a lot of growth on the horizon. We simplified the Creative visual identity while keeping hints of the original brand design in tact. My goal wasn’t to leave what Creative was in the past in the dust, but rather let the brand evolve.

It is hard to believe just how much heart and talent can be in one brand! In years past, the C@H website mainly focused on the conference sales page and a few other informational pages, but in 2018, the Creative brand really took off and became a destination for creatives of all kinds to interact with and learn from (including a new blog!).

 

While the website was built for conversion first, it was also built to be an experience.

 

The entire site is filled with interactive details like:

 

Arrows & Layers, Oh My!

 

Seriously, Kat and I laugh about the arrows, but they have a purpose. 😉 They keep the end user scrolling and clue you in that there is more to the experience happening, “right this way!”

 

When I pitched the wire frame to Kat, I explained my conceptual design of layering the canvases. As you’ll see in the final website, some canvases quite literally layer on the canvas before them. This design detail gives nod to the C@H Family brand story. The website, much like the people who love the Creative brand, come together, deeply bond, and feel completely welcomed.

Fill in the blanks

 

With the new site, Kat launched an all new (and FUN!) quiz: What’s Your Creative Personality. The quiz in and of itself is an entire experience, but I really ran with the quiz concept and weaved it into the design of the whole site with unexpected “fill in the blanks” on the Home Page, About Page, Sales Page, and even the Blog Category Headers!

 

Adding this Biz Quiz Style of design throughout the Creative site helped break up all the copy in a visually interesting way to keep the end user engaged!

Stunning Resources Page

 

Kat does a fantastic job of bringing dynamic educators to the Creative at Heart Conference who not only have serious business savvy, but also value doing business with heart. She brought that same sense of education that both equips creatives with business resources and encourages them in their lives into a value packed Resources Page. We kept the interactive details going strong on this page with a Recommended Tools Section, pop-up newsletter opt-ins for freebie downloads, and a fun book section for fave reads for the heart and for the head.

 

I’m still on the fence, but this just might be my favorite page of the entire design (but really I love all of them!)!

Interactive Video Library

 

Since the beginning, Creative at Heart has had every single event filmed by The Herrintons. The videos are beautiful and such a fun way to look back at all the memories. It made perfect sense to add The Showit 5 Video Library Template into the C@H site!

The Quiz

 

The Creative Personality Quiz experience is SO GOOD. Kat hired my dear friend Lauren Carnes to help her flesh out the messaging of the quiz and they did an amazing job building out the quiz and connecting all the dots from the questions to the detailed results pages to unique email sequences after the quiz is taken. Seriously, go take it!

High Converting Sales Page

 

Round 9 officially launched yesterday and the Creative team sold 105 tickets in 3 HOURS. 83 of them sold in the first 26 minutes. I can’t even! I am so excited to head to R0und 9 as a keynote speaker and was so honored to get to design the sales page for the event! You just have to see all the Round 9 details HERE!
